UN DAY 2024

24 October | UN City Copenhagen

A SYMBOL OF HOPE FOR GLOBAL UNITY

United Nations Day, on 24 October, marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.

There is no other global organization with the legitimacy, convening power and normative impact of the United Nations. No other global organization gives hope to so many people for a better world and can deliver the future we want. Today, the urgency for all countries to come together, to fulfil the promise of the nations united, has rarely been greater.

UN Day, celebrated every year, offers the opportunity to amplify our common agenda and reaffirm the purposes and principles of the UN Charter that have guided us for the past 79 years.

UNITED NATIONS DAY 2024

UN Day 2024 will be a special occasion to celebrate the founding of the United Nations while also engaging in a discussion on the UN’s Pact for the Future. This forward-looking initiative aims to transform global governance, tackle climate change, enhance digital cooperation, and promote peace, security, and sustainable development. The event will feature two key sessions unpacking pivotal elements of the Pact:

Financing for Development – Co-organized by UNDP, UNEP, and UN Women, this session will discuss the importance of gender equality in accelerating the SDGs, explore strategies to create a sustainable finance architecture, and showcase initiatives that align finance with gender equality goals.

Supporting People on the Move – Co-organized by IOM and UNHCR, this discussion will explore global migration and displacement trends, highlighting the importance of data in shaping effective policies. This session will address how accurate information helps counter misconceptions and informs responses to humanitarian crises, featuring insights from IOM’s World Migration Report and UNHCR’s Global Report. Participants will gain insights into how these sections of the Pact address urgent global challenges and contribute to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Hymn to the United Nations

Get inspired by this revived W.H. Auden’s Hymn to the United Nations. “Let music for peace Be the paradigm, For peace means to change At the right time, As the World-Clock, Goes Tick and Tock. So may the story Of our human city Presently move Like music, when Begotten notes New notes beget, Making the flowing Of time a growing”.

How it all started

In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945, when the Charter had been ratified by a majority of signatories. Summit of the Future 2024

World leaders are at UN Headquarters in New York where they adopted the potentially game-changing Pact for the Future by consensus – with a small group of just seven countries holding out, having failed to pass a last-minute amendment. The centrepiece of the Summit of the Future is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine the multilateral system and steer humanity on a new course to meet existing commitments and solve long-term challenges.
