docUNight: FLEE
14/12/2023 @ 17:00 - 19:30
Join us for a special docUNight screening of the Oscar-nominated, animated documentary film ‘Flee’. The film tells the extraordinary true story of a man, Amin, on the verge of marriage, which compels him to reveal his hidden past for the first time.
Amin Nawabi, a 36-year-old high-achieving academic, grapples with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years, the story of his journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan. This traumatic past threatens to derail the life he has built for himself and his soon to be husband. Recounted mostly through animation to the director, he tells the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan for the first time.
An international co-production with Denmark, France, Norway, and Sweden, the film is directed by Danish filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen; with Riz Ahmed and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau serving as executive producerrs and narrators for the English version. ‘Flee’ had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021 and it was also screened at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival and the 2021 New York Film Festival.

About International Migrants Day:
Created to celebrate migrants, to advocate for their rights, and to encourage the international community to work together to harness the power of migration, International Migrants Day takes place every year on 18 December.
For this year’s International Migrants Day, the IOM Sub-Regional Office for the Nordic Countries and the UNHCR Northern Europe Office have joined together to raise awareness about migration in all its facets.
Throughout history, people have been on the move, and, in today’s interconnected and globalised world, migration is part of the everyday fabric of our society. Migration can provide solutions to global challenges, such as labour shortages, adapting to the impacts of climate change, or providing better economic opportunities for communities.
The power of one person to make a difference cannot be underestimated. Each person can be an agent of change for their community and help to create opportunities for others. From migrants themselves to United Nations personnel, from host community members to the diaspora, we can all inspire others to act today. Partnerships are at the heart of unlocking the promise of migration.
Every one of us can play a part.
About the International Organization for Migration (IOM):
Established in 1951, IOM is the leading intergovernmental organisation in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM works to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and internally displaced people.
About UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency:
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organisation dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. UNHCR leads international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. UNHCR’s vision is a world where every person forced to flee can build a better future.
