IOM (International Organization for Migration)
Established in 1951, IOM is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners.
With 175 member states, a further 8 states holding observer status and offices in over 100 countries, IOM is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. IOM is part of the United Nations system, as a related organization.
IOM supports migrants across the world, developing effective responses to the shifting dynamics of migration and, as such, is a key source of advice on migration policy and practice. The organization works in emergency situations, developing the resilience of all people on the move, and particularly those in situations of vulnerability, as well as building capacity within governments to manage all forms and impacts of mobility.
Since the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in 2018, IOM coordinates the secretariat of the United Nations Network on Migration (UNNM) which ensures effective, timely and coordinated UN system-wide support to Member States.
IOM in UN City
IOM opened its office in Denmark in 2009 and since 2013 IOM Denmark has been part of UN City in Copenhagen. IOM Denmark develops and implements migration projects in Denmark in collaboration with its partners, reporting to IOM’s Sub-Regional Office in Brussels.
Migration projects managed from Denmark include support to Resettlement of refugees to Denmark, Climate Change and Migration Data in East, West and North Africa, technical support to labour mobility/migration and Immigration and Border Management , among others.
In 2022, IOM Denmark was designated as a Country Office with liaison functions for the Nordic countries and it coordinates and supervises IOM’s country offices in Denmark, Finland, and Norway.
This enables IOM to strengthen collaboration with and between partners in the Nordic countries on areas of mutual interest and increase their knowledge and understanding of IOM’s strategies and work globally.
