SUMMARY:docUNight: BORDERLANDS
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special docUNight screening of ‘Borderlands’ – a profound visual exploration of life in Africa’s borderland regions\, where 270 million people navigate daily challenges with unique resilience and innovation. \nAfrican border regions are often characterised by conflict\, limited state presence\, marginalisation\, and lack of access to basic services and opportunities. However\, these areas also hold significant potential for innovation\, trade\, and sustainable development. They are hubs of creativity and local solutions to some of today’s global crises. \nIn exploring individual stories from across Kenya\, Tanzania\, Zambia\, Uganda\, Nigeria\, Niger\, Benin\, and Cameroon\, the film reveals the realities of borderland life\, where survival and adaptation are intertwined with efforts to maintain cultural identity and foster economic growth. More than a documentary\, ‘Borderlands’ serves to bring the stories of borderland communities to an international audience\, fostering action\, influencing policy\, and rallying resources for inclusive\, sustainable development. \nProduced by the UNDP Africa Borderlands Centre\, through vivid storytelling and intimate portrayals\, ‘Borderlands’ reveals how inhabitants of these regions are crafting sustainable futures against a backdrop of socio-economic and environmental challenges – underscoring the importance of solidarity and shared responsiblity in fostering sustainable development across the continent. \nRun time: 53min \nLanguage: English \n––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– \nSnacks and drinks will be available for purchase before the event between 16:30–17:30. \nPlease bring a valid photo-ID to get through security at UN City and set aside time for the security check prior to the event. Despite facing unique challenges\, through its engaging storytelling and on-the-ground narratives\, illuminates the lives\, resilience\, and possibilities that dwell within these diverse communities. \nAbout the UNDP Africa Borderlands Centre: \nDedicated to research\, advocacy\, and policy development\, the Africa Borderlands Centre focuses on the continent’s borderland regions\, emphasising their importance in achieving peace\, security\, and development across Africa. \nThe Africa Borderlands’ Centre (2021–2025) was established in 2020 as a specialised centre that treats border regions as distinct economic and political zones in their own right. The Borderlands Centre offers specialised\, expert knowledge and technical advice that will enable the better design\, implementation\, and adaptation of development programmes for border regions across Africa. Its knowledge and innovation products will support borderland communities\, national governments\, inter-governmental agencies\, UNDP country offices\, UN agencies\, development partners and other key stakeholders in addressing complex development challenges. \nLearn more about the UNDP Africa Borderlands Centre here. \nAbout the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP): \nAs the lead United Nations agency on international development\, UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. \nUNDP’s work is centred around six core development areas: poverty and inequality\, governance\, resilience\, environment\, energy\, and gender equality. \nUNDP helps countries develop policies\, leadership skills\, partnerships and institutional capabilities to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
